The second-harmonic pulse train from a actively/passively mode-locked Nd:YAG laser is used to synchronously pump a rhodamine dye laser. The dye laser puise is compressed in the laser cavity by inserting a saturable absorber DODCI dye cell near the end of the cavity. We have observed good compressing tendency near 598nm while pumping with different pulse width. The shortened dye laser pulses have shown obviously much better in pulse shape and its Symmetry. The possible shortening mechanism has been discussed.
